What types of companies are applying to the program?
The program is open to clean energy technology companies seeking to do business with public or public interest entities and have a product that (1) has a Technology Readiness Level (TRL) of 8-9 (as determined by the NYSERDA TRL calculator); and (2) can provide meaningful and demonstrable value to customers while reducing GHG emissions. How long does it take to get on the CRT list? And then, from there how long does it take to get project funding support?
It takes about 1-2 months to get on the CRT list. Once you are approved for the CRT list, you are eligible for project funding. After we receive the project application, you will be notified of your status after approximately two months.
How do you determine whether a company is a “Massachusetts-based company”?
In order to be eligible for the Massachusetts funding options of the program, applicant companies must currently have and maintain a majority of the following functions in Massachusetts:
- Company Headquarters (primary executives located in Massachusetts)
- Primary research and development operations
- Primary manufacturing operations
- Primary sales & marketing office
For a company that does not have all four functions (e.g., a company that does not have a manufacturing operation), a majority of the functions the company does have must be located in Massachusetts. If a selected applicant does not maintain these requirements, the award will be subject to rescission/cancellation by MassCEC.
What constitutes “establishing a Massachusetts presence”?
Applicant companies based outside of Massachusetts must hire at least one full-time employee in Massachusetts, as demonstrated by a signed offer letter or employment contract, to qualify as having established a presence in the Commonwealth. The employee must have a Massachusetts business address. Co-working spaces are acceptable. Virtual membership in a Massachusetts incubator does not constitute establishment of a Massachusetts presence.
How soon after award does the non-Massachusetts based company need to establish a Massachusetts presence?
In order to contract with MassCEC, a non-Massachusetts based company must establish a Massachusetts presence within three months of award notification. If the timeline is not met, the company may reapply for the award once the eligibility requirement has been met.
How should a public entity or public interest entity who is interested in deploying a CRT-Listed technology engage in the program?
Any entity interested in the program should review the Commercially-Ready Technologies List to see if there are potential products or services that would fit its needs. Representatives should feel free to reach out directly to CRT companies, or to MassCEC at DeployMass@masscec.com.
When are applications due?

Can a company apply with multiple products or technologies and should they submit multiple proposals for the CRT List?
If a company has more than one product or technology that may be eligible for the program, the company should submit a CRT application for each technology. A company is eligible to request funding and technical assistance in support of a specific deployment for each individual technology on the CRT List. Eligibility for CRT List inclusion is assessed separately for each product. Similarly, eligibility for project funding is assessed separately for each project.
